VAKA

VAKA dining chair

Production Junet

Design Jukka Jokinen & Heikki Konu

Vaka is a dining chair with a very durable structure, yet maintaining a graceful and cozy design language. The chair’s name Vaka refers to the old form of the Finnish word vakaa (stable), which reflects the chair’s solid structure and timeless design language, as well as high-quality and durable materials. Vaka is perfectly suited for public spaces and at home as part of a dining group.

We wanted to invest in easy customization; both the metal frame of the chair and the wooden parts can be easily modified to suit the space and the desired atmosphere with the help of different colors, wood materials and textile upholstery. Vaka is locally produced in Finland.

“The whole design process went very smoothly and the project was completed according to schedule. The chair perfectly meets all the criteria set for the design of the product. The end result is excellent!”

DESIGN PROCESS

Assignment

The starting point for the design of the Vaka chair was to design a chair with a very durable structure, yet maintaining a graceful and cozy design language.

Benchmark

We begin the design process by studying the market situation of the product under design. This comparison helps to understand the competitive situation of the product and helps to delimit the features of the concept.

Ideation and sketching

After the market research, the ideation and sketching phase begins. The sketching is usually done by hand. We like to consider many options and make a lot of drawings first and then narrow down the options to find the best idea concept.

3D-modeling

We have excellent knowledge of the use of modeling programs and product drawings are created with the help of editable 3D models. In 3D modeling, the shapes and exact details of products, different components and materials can be precisely defined.

Image rendering

Before a product really exists, we can create rendered images by 3D modeling and rendering the product concept. This way the customer can see how the finished product would look before the first prototype is created.

Prototyping

The cooperation with Junet was meaningful and the special needs of the furniture brought an appropriate challenge to the design. What was particularly great about the collaboration was that the desired concept could be implemented as a local production in Finland.

Production

Vaka dining chair is locally produced in Finland. The chair was launched at the Junet Pop-up Showroom event during the Helsinki Design Week 2023.
