MONUMENTS

Monuments CLT furniture

Collaboration Crosslam

Design Jukka Jokinen & Heikki Konu

Monuments is an ecological design furniture series that utilizes waste material from CLT house production. The project has been implemented in cooperation with CLT manufacturer Crosslam. The material used was the waste pieces of solid wood elements from the CLT factory, which are produced in Finland as a by-product of the wooden house industry in tons per year.

The design language of the furniture has been implemented under the terms of CLT material. This is where their massive and monumental character comes from: CLT material created to be strong should not be shredded into small parts, but its power and capacity needs to be highlighted. AVEK and the Asko Foundation have supported this project.

DESIGN PROCESS & PRODUCTION

Background

The ecological CLT waste material is created as a byproduct of the wood construction industry. It was utilized as a raw material for high-quality designer furniture. On average, 10-12% of waste material is produced in CLT production annually. In Finland, 25,000 cubic meters (in Europe total of 100,000) of waste that goes to incineration is created. Truckloads of new, clean and high-quality goods end up as energy waste.

Sketching

The sketching is usually done by hand and is based on creative thinking and ideation. We like to consider many options and make a lot of drawings first and then narrow down the options to find the best idea concept.

3D modeling

In 3D modeling, the shapes and exact details of the product can be precisely defined with the help of editable 3D models. We use our own 3D printer to create models of product concepts, which can be used to show how the different features of the product actually look and feel like.

Image rendering

Before a product really exists, we can create rendered images by 3D modeling and rendering the product concept. This way the customer can see how the finished product would look before the first prototype is created.

Production

The material used was the waste pieces of solid wood elements from the Crosslam CLT factory. They are produced in Finland as a by-product of the wooden house industry in tons per year. Utilizing CLT waste material and refining it into wonderful, carbon-negative design furniture shows that ecological responsibility is at the center of this project. The use of this kind of waste material has enormous untapped ecological and commercial potential.
