The component development project for electric bikes was a comprehensive industrial design process in which the product was created to fit the required functional purpose. The purpose of the part is to protect the wires and cables and to reduce the ingress of water into the hull. The project was a collaboration with the Sähköpyöräkeskus company.
The process covered product design from the beginning, but also the production of components by 3D printing. The components were designed to fit the new Terässiipi electric bikes and as spare parts for Prophete bike models.
“I am extremely happy with the collaboration with Jokinen Konu Design. They understood our need and implemented it very well into a functional product”
Juho Kahra, CEO Sähköpyöräkeskus
DESIGN PROCESS & PRODUCTION
Design Assignment
Everything starts from the customer’s need. The project is defined and the steps and results it entails are agreed upon together.
Sketching and Design
The sketching is usually done by hand. We like to consider many options and make a lot of drawings first and then narrow down the options to find the best idea concept.
3D modeling
We have excellent knowledge of the use of modeling programs and product drawings are created with the help of editable 3D models. In 3D modeling, the shapes and exact details of products, different components and materials can be precisely defined.
Prototyping
Product development was an extensive process in which the attachment and other properties of the component were carefully thought out and tested to find the right functional form. Many different prototypes were made until a well-fitting shape with perfect details was found.
Production: 3D printing
The production of the electronic bike components was made in the Jokinen Konu studio with our own 3D printer. Dozens of components were printed at once and the customer received the parts they needed on a fast schedule. The components were printed with a material suitable for outdoor conditions.
